The Phenomenon
Rick Ankiel and Tim Brown, 292 pages
Enjoyable re-telling of Ankiel’s struggle with the Yips and his fortitude to remake himself as an outfielder. Definitely repetitive with him waxing poetic on almost every page—stretching out the story. I was good with it, but I am a lifelong Cardinals fan and familiar with his career. I’m not sure how well the material would connect with the uninitiated. This was co-written with sports journalist Tim Brown. It would have been interesting if it read less like an autobiography and more like a biography where other voices (La Russa, Dave Duncan, other players) are interjected more directly. By the end of the book I definitely felt empathy for Ankiel and even intimated by his struggle. It would be cool to see him re-emerge with the Cardinals in a prominent way.
