Much props to the ambitiousness and creativity of this first-time author, telling this story through the lens of a bulldog, the parasites that infest the dog, and from neutral perspectives. It took chances and I appreciated that. Parts did feel overwritten (look how poetic and smart I am) and a few details with the ending were obscure, although I don’t think purposely so. I just couldn’t register what she was getting across — the metaphors and abstract descriptions more of a barrier than a bridge in wrapping up the book. I also wanted to see the dog ultimately overcome her situation and I didn’t get that satisfaction.
