From Strength to Strength
Arthur C. Brooks, 221 pages
Yet another book that I was hoping for more from as Brooks sets out to describe how “strivers” should approach the second half of life. Technically, I suppose I fit Brooks’s definition of a “striver” – but I lack the hard-charging, workaholism qualities he spends so much of the book trying to get CEOs and the like to pivot away from. While he attempts to provide concrete action steps to transition into a new phase of life, it mostly felt esoteric or inactionable platitudes. Not totally fair on my point, but not totally off the mark either. My takeaways, for better or worse, from this book are: own your weaknesses, find new strengths, accept that decline in capabilities is inevitable, and give attention to what really matters—people.
