The Book of Strange New Things

Michel Faber, 500 pages

This wasn’t Christian sci-fi, but an ambitious sci-fi story that incorporated a Christian theme. The title of the book refers to the Bible and my physical copy of the book has faux-gilded edges to mimic a Bible as well. The protagonist is a drug-addict-alcoholic-turned-blissfully-married-God-loving-Pastor that’s transported across space on a secret operation where he is to serve as a missionary to an alien race on a planet that humans seek to colonize. The Pastor must navigate an ambiguous basecamp, a mysterious alien culture, agonizing separation from his wife, and disconnected learnings about a world back home that’s going to hell. What is truly meaningful? What is God’s role? What is the purpose of life? What does it mean to live? All the big questions come out. Despite the corny premise, the writing is smart, if not a bit slow. It picks up in the latter part of the book. A somewhat unsatisfying close to the story, but the author wisely chose to avoid a Hollywood ending. So a decent read, not incredible, but one I’ll likely think about from time to time.
