SAN DIEGO, CA – In November and early December 2011, it seemed that the (7th) annual Bachmas celebration was in severe jeopardy of being canceled as the early arrival of Tristan Matthew Bachmann threatened to separate the clan in two different cities. But the power of Bachmas prevailed. Matt, Angela, Tristan, Sasha, Roman, Opie and Cali were all present and accounted for as the calendar reached December 28th. View the Bachmas Photo Gallery here.
Bachmas originated in 2005 by Matt and Angela to establish Christmas traditions of our own. December 28th was selected as our own Bachmann Christmas (“Bachmas”) because typically Matt was in St. Louis on 12/25 and returned home around 12/28.
In addition to establishing a unique day for our Christmas celebration (and opening of gifts), we adopted three rules:
1) Food – an original holiday needed an original food. The velveeta/pork sausage/rye bread pizza snack (a Judy recipe) was adopted as the official food to always be consumed on Bachmas.
2) Activity –we had to work off those pizza snacks. Bachmas would always feature a family walk.
3) Participants – this is our holiday, our tradition. It’s not the tradition of our parents, our relatives or even our friends. And they are not allowed to partake. Bachmas is our family’s day.
In 2005, Bachmas was celebrated by Matt, Angela, Opie and Cali. In 2007, Sasha joined us for Bachmas. This year, Bachmas expanded again. Roman joined our family on Good Friday. Tristan Matthew was born on 11-25-11.
This year featured a walk at Hilltop Community Park on a sunny 70-degree day, the usual pizza snack goodness and evening present-opening.
