Raising Hare: A Memoir

Chloe Dalton, 284 pages

A quick read about a woman escaping to her second home in the English countryside during the pandemic, only to find herself taking care of a baby wild hare she stumbles across. The hare comes and goes, spending many hours a day inside the woman’s house. Eventually the hare’s children also become part-time residents. I liked the country setting, the escapism from the pandemic, the focus on nature and animals, and the somewhat soothing vibe of the storytelling. I was annoyed by the author’s insistence of constantly interrupting the story with hare factoids, hare-related quotes from books, and other minutiae that added little other than to prove that she “did her research” on hares. The open-ended conclusion was actually a bit too open-ended for my liking, but at least it didn’t end in Hollywood fashion, nor as a tear-jerker. I suppose this allows for a potential sequel.
