Fahrenheit 451
Rad Bradbury, 249 pages
Cool dystopian concept of a world where books are banned and burned when discovered. A means of suppression and control. Firemen don’t put out fires, but start them when they are alerted to the presence of books hidden in a home (and the home is torched, too). I found the author’s writing style challenging when trying to connect to the emotions and thoughts of the characters, particularly the protagonist’s wife. Is she excited in this scene? Upset? Delirious? All of the above? The premise was stronger than the storyline, although the story had enough unique elements to keep it interesting like the mechanical hound and the “futuristic” TV walls that play crap shows to keep people zoned out. Two movies were made from the novel (one back in the 60s, the other recently by HBO). Haven’t watched either. I can see how it would be difficult to really capture the essence of the book as a film. 451 refers to the temperature that book paper combusts.
