Careless People

Sarah Wynn-Williams, 400 pages

An expose of Facebook by a former exec that worked with the senior leadership team for 7 years. As close to a beach read as nonfiction might get, I devoured the author’s entertaining retelling of her experiences at the app. It underscored my loathe for Facebook and confirmed Zuckerberg as a douche, once again. The account felt even-handed and honest, but I was cautious to keep in mind that the author has her own bias. She also was complicit in supporting bad decisions, and while she may regret it all now, she didn’t fully own up to her own enablement of these unethical fucks. She also clearly had issues setting boundaries, particularly work-life balance. Her husband was unbelievably tolerant of her poor choices. It was carefully crafted to avoid lawsuits, but detailed enough to bring about legal action from Facebook. I picked up the book in the Zurich airport and read the first 40% or so on the flight home.
