Believe: Why Everyone Should Be Religious

, pages

A rigorous, well-crafted argument for being religious. This was the antithesis of the blog post as a book. This was a book. No fluff. Intelligently organized. It gave me lots to think about and wasn’t an easy read despite its economical page count. While the author made compelling points and was very even-handed with his arguments, I feel the case he made was only equal to the case against religion, not superior to it. I was left with the impression that maybe he would agree with that statement, considering that a win –– in other words, “if all things are equal and my arguments paint that picture, then you should go with religion, in case that atheism thing turns out to be wrong.” He basically comes out and says this very thing. What almost blows this whole thing up is the author’s case for Christianity (he’s Roman Catholic) at the end of the book. While loaded with caveats, casting his vote for his preferred religion seems to water down his overall argument. Overall though, this one will stick with me for awhile.
