The photo above was taken on June 5, 2002, minutes before Matt and Angela departed for St. Louis for life on the West Coast. Driving our Honda Accord with Opie in the back seat, we arrived in San Diego the next day – June 6, 2002.
Exactly 10 years to the day – June 6, 2012 – Matt and Angela are leaving San Diego (temporarily, we hope) for life in the Big Apple. Much is the same as it was a decade ago. The Honda Accord will make the journey. Opie, too. But this time we’ll have Sasha and Roman making the 1,800+ mile trip to our first destination, St. Louis, in Matt’s Toyota Tacoma. And awaiting us in STL will be little Tristan.
Angela plans to be in St. Louis from 6/7-6/18 before heading to New York; the rest of the clan will likely remain in STL for most of June before heading East.
In NY, we are living on Roosevelt Island which is a 2-mile strip of land in the East River just East of, and overlooking, Manhattan. We will be on the 13th floor of an apartment building built 9 years ago. Supposedly Roosevelt Island: is a strange little suburbia with parks and open spaces surrounded by the Big City; has a bus that travels around the island for 10 cents; is home to many of the families working with the Cornell University health system (like us); has a subway stop and a tram/cable car that crosses the river; is home to a Starbucks, a bad pizza joint and a chain drug store.
Angela will be working in Manhattan as part of a Pathology Fellowship through Cornell (a civilian program, but the Navy is funding it). After her one year of training, she will return to a military hospital (likely in San Diego). Matt is working remotely on an as needed basis with his current employer, Traina Design in San Diego.
We will be re-creating the photo shown above before heading out to STL. Stay tuned for this and other updates.
