Model Home
Eric Puchner, 360 pages
A novel about a dysfunctional family in the ’80s that winds up living in a cheaply produced model home in the middle-of-nowhere California desert next to a sewage dump. The story is told through the different perspectives of the family members. A decent effort by a young writer, but large portions of the story felt unoriginal. The author was successful at creating a depressing scenario and tapped into family feuds and idiosyncrasies that resonated as authentic. One small annoyance was one of the main characters (Lillian) was referred to as Lyle the entire book, and I had to remind myself frequently that Lyle was a female character. I appreciated that not everything in the novel was resolved at the end – kinda saved this one for me.
