Skippy Dies
Paul Murray, 661 pages
This single novel was published in a 3-book set for the paperback edition. Hadn’t seen that before. Set in a modern day all-boys college prep school in Dublin, there was plenty of adolescent humor and antics. It wasn’t a difficult read despite the length, yet I didn’t really like it much. The characters were brought along slowly and I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to care about most of them until I finally picked up on if they were central to the story. Some characters and college antics were a bit cliché – was seeking more originality here. Then the third book was very schizoid. Was this ending up to be a story about suicide? Eating disorders? Pedophilia? Just where is the author going here? I couldn’t detect the current of the story. The ending was a letdown, too. Maybe I just didn’t get it. I wouldn’t recommend this book to a friend, more because of a feeling of neutrality than disdain.
