The Pale King

David Foster Wallace, 548 pages

Not for the mainstream reader as this is “classic” DFW. There were reoccurring themes and characters, but a very thin storyline to hold them together. In fact, you could re-organize the chapters and not mess anything up. Part of that is because of DFW’s writing style, partially because the novel is unfinished as DFW hung himself before completing it. This novel was consistent with his other books: it takes an extreme and focused effort to get through, is not that enjoyable a ride, but is satisfying on some level upon completion – similar I guess to a really long, exhausting workout. Certain parts he captured the human psyche in an engaging way. When he addressed the reoccurring theme of boredom is ironically when the book was most interesting. In simple terms, the book is about fictional IRS workers that have extremely tedious and repetitive jobs processing tax returns. A difficult topic to make interesting for any author
