My Landlady the Lobotomist
Eckhard Gerdes, 104 pages
Bizarre postmodern metafiction. Wasn’t sure how much it was the author’s intent to try and come off as bizarre or if the author is just weird. Published in 2008 by some mom-and-pop company, the novel is more like a short story. It wove several mini-stories within a larger theme – that of a dude whining about not getting the girl he wanted. The “oh my life sucks because we aren’t together” got old after awhile, even though it was conveyed through creative metaphors and play on words. The first couple chapters set up the novel in a certain way, then the story veers off into another direction and never regains the tone of the first couple of explanatory chapters. At 104 pages, it was a quick read and so the investment of time was minimal. Recommended if you want a palate cleanser in between books written by the sane.
