Edwin Mullhouse: The Life and Death of an American Writer 1943-1954 by Jeffrey Cartwright. Mixed feelings on this one. It slowly got better as the book progressed, and the ending (although not entirely surprising) cast a creepy feel over the entire book. A psychological thriller in disguise, written back in the 70’s. The gist of the book was one child (Jeffrey) describing his friend’s (Edwin’s) life story from cradle to his premature death at age 11. The minutiae of growing up is described in detail because what big developments are there when you are 4? Jeffrey makes Edwin out to be this eccentric, creative author who births this strange novel at age 10. What he winds up describing is an autistic kid with average talent obsessed with his weird book project. What is left to interpretation is Jeffrey’s real thoughts about Edwin and that leads to the creepy ending and death of Edwin. Is that vague enough for you? Can’t recommend this one, but it should be given good marks for effort.
