Under the Dome
Stephen King, 1,074 pages
My first Stephen King novel. Possibly my last. Story concept was intriguing, but execution left me wanting. Characters and dialogue were George Lucas-esque – flat, predictable and cheesy at times. The story focused purely on the “society” trapped under the dome and I thought there was a missed opportunity to show the politics and such that went on outside the dome between the government decision makers. Too many pop culture references and blatant Tarantino-like violence (gore just for the sake of gore) for my taste. My review is sounding very negative, so let me say that it was an easy read, especially for 1,000+ pages and I thought King put forth an effort, but it just didn’t all come together. The ending was probably the biggest disappointment, especially with the unlimited sci-fi possibilities he set up. Again, Lucas-esque, as in that’s how Darth Vader became Vader. Really? After all this waiting (reading) that’s all you got?
