Inside of a Dog
Alexandra Horowitz, 301 pages
This is a nice companion read to Animals in Translation covering many of the same topics. In fact, Horowitz mentions Grandin’s autism work on several occasions. Inside of a Dog is really Animals in Translation Light, taking a more broad strokes, simplistic view on dog behavior. While I did learn a few valuable nuggets, she rarely provided any “wow” moments and ended many sections with variations of “being a dog could be like this, but we just don’t know.” The clean, contemporary cover and matter-of-fact title lead me to believe this was going to be a truly revealing book about dogs and a must-recommend to fellow dog lovers. Not the case. Enjoyable, but temper your expectations.
