Then We Came to the End

Joshua Ferris, 385 pages

Told from an interesting “we” perspective where the author is part of the group (“then we went to a meeting…”), but is never recognized as an actual character. The story of a struggling ad agency after the dot-com boom, I obviously could relate on many levels and was reminded many times of Glennon and Kupper Parker, not to mention my current job. The thrust of the book is office gossip, idiosyncrasies of office workers, and the despair of intelligent people that feel there has to be a better way to make a living than putting up with office and client crap. The author exaggerates the gossip and escapades of the characters, on purpose, but it got old in my opinion. A secondary theme of cancer actually saves the overall storyline. Really strong for a first novel, I’ll give the upcoming 2010 Joshua Ferris novel (his second) a shot.
