Under the Skin
Michel Faber, 311 pages
This was my post-Infinite Jest palate cleanser. And I raced through it in 6 days. If M Night Shyamalan wrote a book, this is the book I think he would write. Somewhat normal happenings eventually twist and turn to reveal a creepier, supernatural reality. The storyline is creative (although difficult to explain succinctly without revealing too much), yet the underlying themes of societal classes, what it means to be free and animal cruelty feel unoriginal, with no new ground broken here. Ambitious enough that I’d consider another novel by Faber, but this one would only merit a mild
recommendation to those who enjoy stories that incorporate horror/suspense/sci-fi elements. Holds some similarities in theme to Brave New World, but radically different in context.
