The Secret Life of Groceries
, pages
A well-written look at the food industry that was broader than just grocery stores, but had plenty to say about traditional supermarkets. The gist was that up and down the line – from suppliers to truck drivers to retail workers – people are exploited, including the ultimate consumer. This wasn’t shocking, but the author’s storytelling really brought it home. The system is set up to work at scale with downward pressure on costs, and that’s where morals and standards get set aside and people are taken advantage of. I enjoyed the author’s voice and his commitment to going behind-the-scenes to the extent of becoming a grocery worker himself. Decent read.
