A City on Mars
Kelly and Zach Weinersmith, 390 pages
Despite being deeply researched and a significant effort made by the authors to entertain, this book was overwritten and boring to me. I was actually quite surprised because I found the premise super interesting, and I acknowledge that the couple went to great lengths to think through all the logistical, technical, political and cultural issues that space settlements are going to have to overcome. The humor, all the funny footnotes, all the comic-style illustrations – it all just fell flat. The authors acknowledged they cut back on the material, but not enough in my opinion. The introduction alone was 40+ pages and really what I learned beyond that was minimal given the 350 pages that followed. So, thumbs up on premise and effort; thumbs down on actual reading experience.
