When Breath Becomes Air

Paul Kalanithi, 225 pages

I wanted to love this book. I liked it, instead. In the vein of Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal, we see healthcare from the physician’s perspective. The physician-author’s own diagnosis of stage 4 cancer was the centerpiece of this book. A book that wasn’t completed before the author passed away. While it tugged on the heartstrings, I didn’t feel that I learned much nor thought about dying/death in a way that was unique. In other words, I enjoyed Paul’s story, but it wasn’t an overly powerful book for me. If I were a doctor, I probably would have connected more with the material that spoke to his journey of becoming one.
