The Children’s Hospital

, pages

Also co-authored The New World that I read earlier this year. A hospital remains afloat after a worldwide flood. This one had much of what I tend to like in Fiction – contemporary setting, a science fiction element, but not science fiction at its core, and an aggressive effort by the author in terms of the story’s scope and scale. Walked away with a positive impression, but I’m not sure it was worth committing to a 600+ page effort. Character development was uneven. Excellent development of protagonist (hated that character) and her brother. Supporting cast felt underdeveloped and/or stereotypical. Definitely could have been shortened without losing the story line, but the length also works in its favor as you grind through the pages much like the characters grind through living in their altered world. I felt like I “got” most of the book, but found myself have to read the parts narrated by the angels multiple times and I also had to reade reviews online to confirm my understanding. The author’s attempts at humor felt forced and his use of medical terminology was unrestrained (when it went over my head I didn’t feel compelled to look it up; physicians will relate to it).  It wandered a bit at the end and wrapped up in a bit of a disappointing manner, but was creative and interesting for the most part.
