The BBA

Die with Zero

Bill Perkins, 203 pages

A blog post stretched to a book. Egregiously repetitive. The premise was interesting and was supported by a select number of unique concepts (“memory dividend”), but the lack of depth and redundancy made this a slog. I almost didn’t read the book after hearing the author on a podcast. He came off as a douche. The voice of the book didn’t sound like him –– it was much more approachable. Then reading through the book I learned he didn’t even write it. He’s an ultra rich – arguably smug – guy that just paid another person to write the book, plus hired a researcher and an assistant to do the grunt work. So essentially he just blathered on for a bit and others made something of it. Unlike some readers, I actually agreed with many of his points, but a rich guy telling everyday people to spend more just doesn’t play well, regardless of how many caveats you throw out there. So I’m not surprised he’s portrayed in many reviews as an out of touch asshole that is only speaking to a narrow slice of the public fortunate to have the type of money he has.
