Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life
Anne Lamott, 220 pages
I really enjoyed the non-pretentious voice of Anne Lamott. She doles out little wisdoms on how to successfully write fiction while weaving in personal anecdotes and things she’s learned along the way as a struggling/successful writer. This isn’t a how-to book as much as it is a long-form commentary on how to survive the mental barriers of writing. Similar to Pressfield’s War of Art, in that regard. Lamott is a straight shooter and portrays herself as a flawed character. Maybe too much, although that helps her play up the points in her book.
