The Screwtape Letters

C.S. Lewis, 209 pages

Read in one sitting on the plane from Japan to LA. The writing style required concerted effort. Well executed, but I found myself trying to plow through it. Didn’t find it all that engrossing, just interesting on a more surface level. Perfect for a theology class, but as a recreational read it didn’t fully deliver as I wasn’t all that interested in truly dissecting Lewis’s take on Christianity as told from the underworld’s perspective. Lewis made mention that he felt the text could have been stronger if he had balanced out the Satanic point of view with that of God’s and I would agree. There’s still plenty of substance to chew on should you wish to take a critical look at Christianity and morality. Could have been the wrong time / wrong place for this read. It was alright, it just didn’t connect with me as I had hoped.
