Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End
Atul Gawande, 282 pages
Recommended by Angela, this book was a quick read and thought-provoking when it comes to how we perceive and manage dying. Atul has a very readable voice and he is a capable storyteller. I felt like the narrative of this book was what Dr. Vivek Murthy sought to capture with his book, Together, but didn’t as that one suffered from a wooden voice and was simply boring. Being Mortal has shades of being an essay stretched into a book, yet Atul avoids that trap with deft writing and just enough variation in the material. However, I think a 10-15% reduction in wordcount to remove some repetition would have provided outsized benefits.
