The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck
, pages
So this is one of those airport bookstore books that I thought was purely gimmick. I suppose someone could continue to make that argument. After reading it, I would disagree. Manson sounded like a party boy and asshole as a young guy. He got his act together and in doing so confidently feels like he understands what and how to prioritize what life throws his (our) way. The thrust of the book isn’t about indifference; it’s the opposite. It’s about caring about what’s meaningful to you, even if that means risking negative opinions from others. Seems like a Captain Obvious conclusion, but it is presented in a fresh manner – at least the first half or so of the book. It’s all about fucks given and fucks not given. After that material runs its course, he then expands out, presenting his personal philosophy and conclusions he’s drawn about living a satisfying life. The back half of the book was solid, but didn’t quite register with me as much as the first half. Regardless, this was a surprisingly entertaining and quick read with more substance than the title suggests.
