“The Quest for the Theory of Everything” is the subtitle, but “Physics for Dummies applied to the Universe” may be more accurate. As a dummy, I really enjoyed Kaku methodically laying out all the basics and all the players from Newton and Einstein to Maxwell and Schrodinger’s Cat. I made a ton of highlights, and if I remember 10%, I’ll feel much more intelligent and knowledgeable about Space, Quantum Theory, String Theory and the rest. The end of the book shifts from being informative to more philosophical and Kaku weighs in on how he thinks about God, Designer of the Universe, What came before, etc. It feels tacked on and less in his comfort zone. Despite a flat ending, I valued the author’s ability to explain physics in basic terms, although there were sections where his dumbed down explanations actually failed to convey certain complex concepts because they actually fall apart when too simplified. So, he lost me in those sections, paradoxically. Still, a smallish book that packs in a lot of value.
