Meticulously researched to the point of being painfully tough to work through, this book is definitely for scholarly types and history buffs. Despite the academic bent, this was a fascinating take on St. Louis. The author’s argument, and indeed it is an argument even with all the citations, feels on point and will have me looking at my hometown differently from now on. In other words, as a genesis of racism and not just a bi-product of it.
