Overdue review. Sci-fi novel. The first part reads like (and originally was) a short story (I believe) – creative, surprising, page turning. I can see this as a really cool movie. The balance of the book (which again I believe was written after the short story gained notoriety and traction) failed to deliver at the same level. It became bogged down in a Star Wars-esque confrontation of a rebellion fighting a larger, evil power. The premise: people live indoors, underground in large silos (communities) on a planet (Earth?) with poisonous air. Criminals are sent outside to their deaths, but not before they are asked to clean the video cameras that give the trapped people their only view of the outdoor world. There’s more to it than this and the author does a decent job of exploring the possibilities of such a setup. Although in the end, I wanted more.
