Far From The Tree
Andrew Solomon, 702 pages
A massive work and one of the NY Times 10 Best Books for 2012 about ordinary parents who must learn to deal with exceptional children – deafness, dwarfism, children conceived in rape, autism, etc. This one had special meaning given my son’s ASD diagnosis. It was a challenging read and so lengthy I had trouble sustaining momentum. I started in 2013 and basically read it in fits-and-starts in 2014. Each topic seemed exhaustively covered which came off as repetitive and difficult. Some of the final chapters seemed forced (i.e. criminal behavior). Solid journalism, but weak editing.
