Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore

Robin Sloan, 288 pages

I enjoyed this novel more for its concept than its execution. The book wove together topics I have interest in: graphic design, fonts, web design, the traditional printed books vs. e-reading technology debate, independent book stores, California and New York settings and science fiction. The premise that an unassuming independent book store was the front for something more mysterious certainly had potential. But as secrets about the store and its patrons were uncovered, I was underwhelmed and the book concludes in similar disappointing fashion. The author then chose to include an Epilogue updating the reader on the lives of all the main characters. It just so happens that everything works out perfectly for everyone. I think it was meant to be over-the-top in that regard, but it did nothing to enhance my opinion of the book. A half-hearted thumbs up.
