Haruki Murakami, 925 pages

At 925 pages, this was a beast. A slow-moving, dreamy meandering beast. It was more of an experience than a novel, with a fantasy-like quality to the storytelling. Pages and pages could go by with very little unfolding. What I enjoyed about the writing though was that I could read this in fits and starts and easily pick up where I had left off (maybe because so little happened in the book) and also remember the players (a nod to the author’s ability to create rich characters). Essentially a love story that dealt with themes of fate, what is reality, meaning of life and what control do we actually have in shaping our future. It wasn’t terrible, but certainly not recommendable. The biggest disappointment was the ending that failed to enlighten the reader on some of the more mystical aspects of the story. I’m not a fan of a story being wrapped up nice and neat Hollywood style, but I was looking for a more redeeming ending to make the long journey worth the ride.
