The Art of Fielding
Chad Harbach, 512 pages
This book had plenty I could relate to: baseball, Cardinal references, collegiate setting in the Midwest. It was always easy to pick up the story where I left off as I read this novel in bite size pieces. The storyline seemed to be humming along, but then got a bit hazy about 2/3 the way through – just exactly where is this book going and what is the author’s intention? Baseball was a leading theme in the beginning of the book and was the final scene of the novel, yet all but disappeared at one point. Several character storylines were interwoven by baseball, then took over the book’s premise. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the uneven nature of the book had me wondering what to really appreciate as I went along on the ride. Things were wrapped up nice and neat (too neat, really) which was disappointing and at the same time almost expected.
