Life of Pi

Yann Martel, 332 pages

The first part of this novel was very mechanical and obvious set-up for the main story. The main story had interesting parts, was a bit redundant in places and then got mechanical, too. You could almost see the checklist of topics the author wanted to address – and he did so in extremely short chapters, one topic per chapter. The end of the book was meant to be a kind of M. Night Shyamalan “I see dead people” twist. While it did offer up a new perspective to the main story, I was anticipating some sort of twist and was a little disappointed. Maybe I just didn’t get it. Maybe I am too impatient to really ponder what the author wanted me to wrestle with. Not sure. Regardless, I would not discourage someone from reading this novel, nor would I give it a clear thumbs up. It certainly has merit as interesting fiction. It just didn’t interest me as much as I had hoped.
