Zeitoun
Dave Eggers, 325 pages
Nonfiction that read like fiction. Intriguing look at Hurricane Katrina and resulting governmental chaos that immediately followed, told through the story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun – an honest, hardworking Syrian-American family man. Zeitoun refuses to flee with his family as the hurricane approaches New Orleans. His ordeal of surviving the Hurricane is nothing compared to the life-threatening aftermath when authorities mistakenly (and preposterously) arrest him as a possible terrorist. It’s 9/11 meets national disaster. It was strange to read about the surreal state of affairs in New Orleans (and Zeitoun’s involvement in it), and then search the internet to validate the reality of the situation. This story may have felt like a Hollywood movie, unfortunately it wasn’t.
