The Unnamed
Joshua Ferris, 310 pages
Unique storyline and contemporary feel, similar to the approach Ferris took with his other novel Then We Came to the End that I read last year. This book is about a guy who has an unnamed condition that causes him to walk spontaneously without his consent. Modern and alternative medicine fails to help him, and his career and marriage are impacted as he continues to experience these strange bouts where his legs overtake his mind and must walk. The novel transitions from the effects the unnamed has on his daily life to bigger picture topics: existence of God, soul vs. body, what does it mean to really live. I enjoyed the first part of the novel, was not as fond of the second part. The end was somewhat satisfying as Ferris could have wrapped everything up Hollywood style, but resisted. Wasn’t my favorite book of the year, but makes you think and I give it points for originality.
