Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself

David Lipsky, 344 pages

Despite terrible formatting and layout – a book-long interview between a reporter for Rolling Stone and author DFW that lacked clear visual cues as to who is talking in the conversation – I really enjoyed it. If you aren’t a DFW fan, it would be hard to appreciate. In sum, the discussion surrounds the process of writing and the difficulties of continued writing once an author finds success – with pop culture references and philosophy-of-life wanderings along the way. DFW’s comments are placed into an eerie perspective given his fate: the reader is told upfront that DFW committed suicide in 2008, yet the interview took place in 1993 as Wallace is on the cusp of fame for Infinite Jest. A must read for DFW fans, a thumbs down for the DFW novice.
